How to teach your client a sign

Step

1

Model
the Sign

Therapist says

"Now we will practice the sign for OPTIMISM"

Therapist models sign by

saying the word OPTIMISM while simultaneously making the sign once, and then once again

Client mimics:

says OPTIMISM while signing it (1st time) and then a (2nd time)

Client makes the sign for OPTIMISM without sounding it out.

Therapist affirms, congratulates and corrects if needed.

Step

2

Evoke
Emotional
Disclosure

Therapist uses prompt from the Cheatsheet to ask the client about feeling that feeling in either the past, present or future.  For example:

When have you felt DEPRESSED in the past few weeks?

When can you see yourself feeling OPTIMISTIC in the coming week?  etc
