Research Design

This study is a randomized control trial (RCT).

Hariton and Locascio (2018) explain that the randomization factor reduces bias and provides a “rigorous tool to examine cause-effect relationships between an intervention and outcome.” (p. 1716).

Researchers consider RCTs as the reference standard because, unlike other study designs, balancing participant characteristics (both observed and unobserved) between groups allows for the attribution of any differences in outcome to the intervention itself (Tarnow-Mordi et al.; as cited by Hariton and Locascio, 2018).

Instruments

Therapists enrolled in this study will be using the following three measures in the first and fifth session that they work with their intervention and control group clients:

  • To measure depression: Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI)

  • To measure happiness: The Authentic Happiness Inventory (AHI)

  • To measure the therapeutic alliance: the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI).

All three of these measurements will be provided in the English language.
